Karlsvärd Fortress, Fortification in Slite, Sweden.
Karlsvärd Fortress is a pentagonal fortification located on Enholmen island near Slite harbor on the Baltic Sea. The structure consists of stone bastions and defensive walls that rise prominently from the water and dominate the landscape of the small island.
Construction started in 1711 under King Charles XII in response to security concerns in the region. By the late 18th century, the fortress had lost its military value and was marked for demolition.
The fortress displays Swedish military architecture from the 18th century, incorporating European fortification techniques visible in its structure today. The pentagonal design and defensive walls shape the island's character and become apparent as you explore the site.
Reaching the fortress requires a boat trip from Slite harbor, with organized tours available during summer months. The National Property Board manages access and can be contacted through local visitor centers for scheduling a visit.
In the middle of the 20th century, the old fortress was repurposed as a secret naval weapons control station, giving its military role an unexpected second life. This hidden function remained active until the 1990s and remains completely unknown to most visitors today.
