Earnaness, Medieval castle ruins in Götene Municipality, Sweden

Earnaness is a castle ruin located on the shores of Lake Vänern, featuring stone foundations that reveal the remains of a substantial medieval structure. The archaeological site shows evidence of a larger complex than initially recorded in historical documents.

The stronghold developed in the early medieval period and became significant during the 14th century under Swedish marshal Torkel Knutsson's ownership. Important political negotiations took place within its walls between members of the royal family.

The castle site connects to the epic poem Beowulf, as Earnanæs represents the location where the legendary hero faced his final battle against a dragon.

The site is accessible by foot through marked walking paths from the nearby village of Årnäs, making it convenient for visitors of various abilities. Informational panels at the location explain the archaeological findings and help clarify what visitors are seeing.

Following the castle's destruction, its territories were granted to the convent of Gudhem, which received royal permission to relocate to a new location. The religious community ultimately chose to establish itself at Rackeby instead, breaking this connection to the ruins.
