Earnaness, Medieval castle ruins in Götene Municipality, Sweden

The stone remnants of Earnaness Castle stand on the shores of Lake Vänern, featuring foundations that indicate a larger structure than initially recorded.

During the early 14th century, Swedish marshal Torkel Knutsson owned this stronghold where King Birger Magnusson signed a treaty with his brothers.

The castle site connects to the epic poem Beowulf, as Earnanæs represents the location where the legendary hero faced his final battle against a dragon.

Visitors reach the castle ruins through marked paths from the nearby village of Årnäs, with informational panels explaining the archaeological discoveries.

After the castle's destruction, its lands transferred to the convent of Gudhem, which received royal permission to relocate but moved to Rackeby instead.
