Stävlö Castle, 19th-century château in Kalmar Municipality, Sweden.
Stävlö Castle is a château in Kalmar Municipality, Sweden, built around a four-story central block with side wings extending outward on both sides. These wings connect to single-story pavilions at each end, giving the whole building a symmetrical, balanced layout.
Carl Otto Posse designed the building and began construction in 1834, embedding his family coat of arms into the architecture as a deliberate choice. The Posse family remained closely tied to the estate for generations after it was completed.
The double-height music room topped with a glass cupola shows how much music and social gatherings mattered to Swedish nobility in the 1800s. Rooms like this served as the social heart of the estate, where family and guests came together for concerts and evenings of entertainment.
The château is privately owned, so the interior is not open to visitors in general. The exterior and grounds can still be seen from a distance, making a brief stop worthwhile for those passing through the area.
The building's layout is shaped to mirror the Posse family coat of arms, a rare case where a heraldic symbol directly determines the form of a structure. This connection between the crest and the floor plan is not obvious at first glance and tends to go unnoticed by most visitors.
