Kieselstein Castle

Kieselstein Castle is a 13th-century fortress in Kranj with an L-shaped design and stone walls overlooking the city center. The building now contains a museum with regional collections and serves as a venue for cultural events.

The fortress was founded in 1256 by the Counts of Ortenburg as a stronghold in the region. Over the centuries it served military and later civilian purposes before eventually becoming a museum.

The museum inside displays objects from the Upper Carniola region and tells the story of the town's past. Visitors can see old weapons, furniture, and artworks that show how people lived here centuries ago.

The site is open from Tuesday through Sunday, and visitors can explore the rooms and exhibitions independently or join guided tours. It is worth checking ahead if events are scheduled, as these may affect access to certain areas.

The castle courtyard contains a summer stage that functions as an open-air theater, hosting performances and concerts during warmer months. This feature transforms the site into a cultural gathering place beyond its standard museum role.
