Kamnik Upper Castle

Kamnik Upper Castle stands as a medieval fortification ruin at 585 meters above sea level on Krniška gora Hill, overlooking the town of Kamnik in central Slovenia. The remains feature a rectangular defensive structure with a southern wall that preserves its original design and structural layout.

The castle was built in the 12th century by the Andeski Counts and controlled key trade routes through the region. A major earthquake in 1511 caused severe structural damage that led to the site's eventual decline.

The remaining southern wall displays three entrance openings and firing positions that reveal the defensive design of this medieval site. Visitors can observe how the rectangular tower once served as the main stronghold of the fortification.

A marked path from Kamnik town center leads uphill through the Little Wooden Mills Grove to reach the castle ruins, taking about 30 minutes on foot. Wear comfortable shoes as the trail is steep and uneven, especially after rain.

The Grajska terasa Café operates on the former castle grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the valley and town while sitting among the medieval ruins. This unexpected pairing of history and leisure offers a distinctive way to experience the site.
