Volčji Potok Arboretum, Botanical garden and national monument in Kamnik, Slovenia
Volčji Potok Arboretum is an extensive 85-hectare botanical garden featuring French and English gardens, gravel pathways, natural forest areas, and wetland meadows. The landscape includes various garden styles and plant zones arranged throughout the grounds.
The estate was first documented in the 17th century and became part of the Souvan family holdings from 1885 onward. It opened to the public as an arboretum in 1952 following changes to its ownership.
The site drew Slovene impressionist painters who found creative inspiration in its landscapes. Today visitors can encounter animal sculptures by artist Janez Boljka displayed throughout the grounds, continuing that artistic connection.
The arboretum sits about 20 kilometers from Ljubljana and is accessible by various transportation options. The site maintains its own plant nurseries and a garden center that also provide landscape architecture services throughout the region.
The grounds hold roughly 5000 plant species including two million spring tulips, 1200 rose varieties, and an extensive rhododendron collection. The rhododendrons peak in bloom during May, creating especially colorful displays during this season.
