Little Castle, Castle ruin in Kamnik, Slovenia
Little Castle is a ruin positioned above a mountain passage, featuring a three-story Romanesque chapel with thick defensive walls. A restored tower anchors the site and commands views of the surrounding terrain.
First documented in 1202, the castle suffered a fire at the end of the 13th century that damaged much of its structure. An earthquake in 1511 caused additional destruction and accelerated its decline into ruin.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Eligius displays wooden ceilings and frescoes painted in the 18th century, reflecting multiple artistic styles accumulated over time. You can see these decorative works as you walk through the stone structure today.
The site is accessible year-round and best visited in dry conditions with sturdy walking shoes. A Medieval Days festival takes place each June at the base of the ruins, featuring music and craft demonstrations.
Local legend speaks of Countess Veronika, who allegedly transformed into a half-serpent creature after refusing to donate money for church repairs. The tale persists in regional folklore and adds a layer of mystery to the ruins.
