Kozjanski Park, Nature reserve in eastern Slovenia
Kozjanski Park is a protected area in eastern Slovenia that spans approximately 20,600 hectares between the Posavje Mountain Range and the plains along the River Sotla at the Croatian border. The landscape features forests, meadows, and traditional orchards that define its character.
Slovenia established this protected area in 1981, making it one of the nation's first and largest nature reserves at the time. The designation reflected growing awareness of the need to safeguard the region's natural and cultural values for the future.
Local communities maintain traditional fruit farming practices that have shaped generations of residents and remain alive in family farms and village gatherings today. These customs tie the region deeply to its agricultural roots.
The area is accessible year-round, with the warmest months offering the best conditions for walking trails and seeing flowers in bloom. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and check current conditions before arrival.
The area harbors an unusual collection of 44 orchid species and around 1200 butterfly species that are not found in most other places. This biological diversity makes it a rare location for nature enthusiasts and wildlife observers.
