Prielom, Mountain pass in High Tatras, Slovakia.
Kerbchen is a mountain pass in the High Tatras located between two major peaks at about 2290 meters elevation. The col connects two significant valleys and features marked trails with safety chains installed on the steeper, more exposed sections.
Karl Kalchbrenner made the first documented crossing in 1864, pioneering a route for mountain travelers. In 1912, marked trails were established by the Hungarian Carpathian Society, making the pass more accessible and safer over time.
The name means 'breakthrough' in Slovak, reflecting how different mountain communities have called this place across generations. Today, you can still find multiple names on trail signs, showing how the pass has been part of different cultural worlds.
Visit during summer months when snow and ice have melted, making the trails safer to walk. You should be comfortable with heights and have good footing skills, especially where chains provide security on steep sections.
A mountain guide is required to ascend from the pass to the nearby peak, making it one of the few restricted alpine routes in the region. This requirement keeps the route safer and ensures only prepared climbers venture into the most demanding terrain.
