Orava reservoir, reservoir in Slovakia
Orava reservoir is a large body of water in the District of Námestovo, Slovakia, formed by damming the Orava River. The water spreads across a broad valley surrounded by forested hills, with sections shallow enough for swimming and open areas used for boating.
Construction of the dam began in 1941 and the reservoir reached its final form by 1954, after more than a decade of engineering work. Several villages were flooded in the process, and their residents were relocated to other parts of the region.
The name comes from the Orava River that once ran through this valley before the dam was built. When water levels drop in dry seasons, the outlines of old foundations emerge from the surface, giving visitors a glimpse into what once stood here.
The reservoir is easy to reach by car from Námestovo, with parking areas close to the water on several sides. In summer, the most popular swimming spots fill up quickly on weekends, so arriving early in the morning helps to find a good place.
A small island near the center of the water holds a historic church and old statues that were moved there before the flooding. The island can only be reached by boat, and guided tours depart from the shore during the warmer months.
