Žiarska chata, Mountain hut in Western Tatras, Slovakia.
Žiarska chata is a mountain hut in the Western Tatras of Slovakia, sitting at roughly 1,325 feet (1,325 m) above sea level in the Žiarska Valley. The building offers sleeping quarters and meals to hikers passing through or using it as a base for nearby routes.
The first hut on this site was built in 1939 and destroyed during World War II, after which a replacement was put up. That later building was completely taken down by an avalanche in 2009, and the current structure was built in its place shortly after.
The hut is run by a local sports club and serves as a meeting point for hikers exploring the Western Tatras. On weekends, many Slovak families and outdoor enthusiasts stop here before or after tackling the surrounding peaks.
The hut is reached on foot via marked hiking trails and works well as a starting point for routes into the surrounding mountains. A reservation in advance is recommended, especially on weekends and during summer, as the number of beds is limited.
After the 2009 avalanche, the new building was designed with structural features intended to resist heavy snow loads and future avalanche pressure. This makes it one of the few huts in the Western Tatras built to those specific safety standards.
