Gýmeš Castle, Medieval castle ruin at 514 meters in Nitra District, Slovakia
Gýmeš Castle is a ruin situated on a hilltop featuring stone walls and a main tower that originated in the 13th century. The site displays remains from multiple construction periods, including substantial baroque modifications from the 18th century.
The castle was founded in the 13th century as a strategic stronghold in the region. It successfully defended against attacks from Bohemian King Ottokar II in 1271 and 1273.
The Forgách family left their mark on the structure through multiple building phases visible in different sections of the ruins. Visitors walking through can trace how architectural styles evolved over the centuries.
Access is via red and yellow marked hiking trails from Jelenec-Remitáž recreation center, requiring about one hour of walking. Visitors should wear suitable footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain on the hillside.
The ruin features a semi-cylindrical tower, an architectural element rarely seen in medieval castles of this region. This distinctive feature resulted from baroque renovations directed by Paul IV Forgács between 1713 and 1755.
