Church of St George

The Church of St George stands on a hill in the eastern part of Kostoľany pod Tribečom with a simple one-nave stone structure showing early medieval construction methods. The building features thick walls and small windows typical of religious architecture from that distant period.

The church was built in the late 9th or early 10th century, making it one of Slovakia's oldest surviving religious buildings with roots in the Great Moravian realm. Its age makes it an important record of early medieval religious history in the region.

The interior walls bear traces of medieval painting from the 11th century showing religious scenes that reveal how people expressed their faith through art. These painted images reflect the spiritual and artistic practices of that era in the region.

The site is accessible on foot from the village and welcomes visitors who wish to explore at a leisurely pace. Visits around All Saints' and All Souls' Days require prior arrangement with the local Parish Office.

The wall paintings were created using a special technique where paint was applied directly to wet walls, connecting them stylistically to other important artworks of that period. This method allowed for intense color bonding and revealed artistic connections within the early medieval region.
