Kobyli Wierch, Mountain summit in Poprad district, Slovakia.
Kobyli Wierch rises to 1109 meters above sea level and marks the easternmost peak of the Belianske Tatras main ridge. The mountain is part of a larger range with caves carved into its slopes, creating a dramatic landscape of rock and vegetation.
The peak appears in a 1589 Spiš Chapter document as Kobyli Gron, showing its name was recorded centuries ago. This early mention proves the area was mapped and named by medieval administrators and locals.
The name comes from local languages, where Slovak, Hungarian, and German versions all mean mare, reflecting how the region's inhabitants named their surroundings. This reveals a connection to farming traditions that shaped the area's identity.
A yellow-marked trail leads from Tatranska Kotlina to Belianska Cave on the northern slope, taking about 35 minutes round trip. The path is well-maintained and straightforward, manageable for visitors of average fitness.
Relict Scots pine trees grow on the slopes and Belianska Cave is the only electrically lit cave open to tourists in the Slovak Tatras. This makes it an unusual spot for cave exploration in this mountain region.
