Uhrovec Castle, Medieval castle ruins in District of Bánovce nad Bebravou, Slovakia.
Uhrovec Castle is a ruined castle on a steep hill in the District of Bánovce nad Bebravou, Slovakia. The remaining stone walls still show rectangular towers and Gothic architectural details.
The castle was founded in the 13th century and served as both a defensive post and a residence for powerful nobles, including Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. It gradually fell out of use and into ruin over the following centuries.
The castle served as a power center for wealthy families who shaped the surrounding region for centuries. Visitors today can participate in excavation work and help uncover medieval artifacts displayed in the site museum.
A marked trail from the village of Uhrovské Podhradie leads up to the ruins and takes around an hour on foot. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the path is steep and the ground is uneven in places.
The builders used the natural rock of the hillside as part of the walls themselves, so the bedrock and the stonework flow into each other without a clear break. In some spots, it is hard to tell where the rock ends and the construction begins.
