Jankov vŕšok, Nature reserve in District of Prievidza, Slovakia.
Jankov vŕšok is a nature reserve in the Strážovské Hills, in the District of Prievidza in Slovakia. The hill is made of volcanic rock and its slopes range from open, sun-exposed grasslands to shaded woodland edges.
The hill was declared a nature reserve in 1993 under the management of the CHKO Ponitrie protected landscape area. This designation came in response to the need to protect the rare plant communities growing on the volcanic terrain.
From the top of the hill, visitors can see the ruins of Uhrovec Castle rising above the valley in the distance. For people from nearby villages, this walk is a familiar weekend outing that ties the landscape to local memory.
The trails are well marked and suited to walkers of different fitness levels. Information panels are placed at several points along the paths, explaining the plants and rock formations you pass.
The volcanic bedrock creates very dry and warm conditions on certain slopes, supporting plant communities more typical of warmer parts of Europe. These xerothermic groups are rarely found elsewhere in the Prievidza district.
