Mačie diery, protected area in Slovakia
Mačie diery is a small nature reserve in the Tvrdošín district covering about 44 hectares within the Tatra national park. The landscape features valleys, depressions, and rocky formations shaped by erosion and weathering over thousands of years.
The reserve was established on January 1, 1974, to protect the local landscape and its natural features. Since then it has been managed by TANAP, the organization responsible for safeguarding natural sites in this region.
The name Mačie diery comes from local tales about wild cats that once roamed this area. Today, visitors experience the quiet rhythm of nature and notice how the landscape remains largely untouched by human development.
Two marked hiking trails totaling around 640 meters provide access through the area and suit light walks with proper footwear. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and take extra care during snowy or stormy conditions when paths become difficult to follow.
The name comes from tales of wild cats that once roamed through the area, and visitors sometimes spot signs of animals still living in the caves and rocky crevices. Local guides share these stories about how wildlife once shaped the identity of this place.
