Nakhon Nayok, Province with waterfalls and national parks in central Thailand
Nakhon Nayok is a province in central Thailand, east of Bangkok, known for its mountain landscapes and protected nature areas. The northern part features forested hills, while the center is crossed by river plains shaped by the river of the same name.
The area was originally called Mueang Lablae and became a garrison town for the Ayutthaya kingdom in 1350. The name Nakhon Nayok was adopted later and roughly means "city of the leader".
The provincial seal shows an elephant lifting a rice ear, a symbol of farming and natural wealth. Many families visit waterfalls and picnic areas on weekends, where they cool off in the streams.
The province lies about 106 kilometers northeast of Bangkok and offers trails through forests as well as rafting on rivers. Tours through the national park are available with guides who know the paths and wildlife.
The Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam is Thailand's largest concrete structure of this kind and regulates water flow for surrounding farmland. Visitors can walk along the dam crest and look at the reservoir from above.
