Maha Sarakham, Province in northeastern Thailand
Maha Sarakham is a province in the southern part of the Khorat plain in northeastern Thailand, marked by rice paddies and low hills in the north and east. Two large universities give the area an academic focus alongside farming communities.
Between the 8th and 10th centuries the ancient town of Champasi existed here, where Buddhist relics were later found during excavations. These finds point to early religious activity in the area.
The area is home to Wat Phutthathiwat and other Buddhist sites where local worshippers gather daily for prayer. Markets sell fresh vegetables, rice, and handmade goods brought in from surrounding fields and workshops.
Buses and local taxis serve the road network throughout the territory. Travelers heading farther can reach airports in Khon Kaen and Roi Et for regional flights.
Regional statistics track development through an index score that reached 0.6523 in the year 2022. Within the nationwide comparison the area ranked 24th among all Thai provinces.
