Kantharawichai is an administrative district located in Maha Sarakham province in northeastern Thailand. The area comprises ten sub-districts divided into 183 villages spread across its territory.
The district was originally established in 1785 as Mueang Kanthang and underwent several name changes throughout its history. In 1913, it was transferred from Kalasin province to Maha Sarakham province.
The district maintains traditional agricultural practices with extensive rice cultivation fields, reflecting the northeastern Thai farming heritage through its rural communities.
The area is managed through several local administrative organizations responsible for local affairs. A notable university within the district serves as an educational hub for the wider region.
At 147 meters above sea level, the district contains three municipal subdivisions and eight Tambon Administrative Organizations managing local governance.
