Sirindhorn Museum, Dinosaur museum in Sahatsakhan, Thailand
Sirindhorn Museum is a natural history museum in Sahatsakhan, northeastern Thailand, focused on fossils and rock specimens from the surrounding area. It is divided into eight exhibition zones that display dinosaur skeletons, geological samples, and finds from local excavations.
The museum grew out of a discovery made in 1994, when dinosaur bones were found at a local temple called Wat Sakawan. The Department of Mineral Resources then began organized excavations and confirmed that the area held one of the most important fossil sites in Thailand.
The museum is named after Princess Sirindhorn, who supported the project and attended its opening. School groups from across Thailand visit regularly, and the displays are arranged so that younger visitors can follow the story of the fossils without prior knowledge.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with separate admission prices for Thai nationals and foreign visitors. Allow enough time to go through all eight zones, and if you are visiting with a group, it is worth arranging a guided tour in advance.
Among the bones on display is a thigh bone from a dinosaur that lived around 209 million years ago, placing it among the oldest known dinosaur types in the world. The museum also holds the largest collection of bones from a single dinosaur species ever found in Thailand.
