Magnesia on the Maeander, Ancient archaeological site in Aydın Province, Turkey.
Magnesia on the Maeander is an ancient city in Aydın Province with remains of a theater, temples, public baths, and an agora located on slopes beside the river. Multiple structures are visible across the site, revealing different periods of urban development.
The city was founded by Magnetes from Thessaly and Cretans, later experiencing control under Lydians and Persians before allying with Rome during the Second Mithridatic War. These shifts in power shaped the settlement across many centuries.
The Temple of Artemis Leukophryene functioned as a major religious center where people from distant lands gathered for the quadrennial Leucophryna festival. Locals used this celebration to strengthen community bonds and honor their patron deity.
The site is accessible by road through Aydın Province and can be visited from the nearby town of Germencik. Lodging and guided tours are available in the area to help visitors explore the remains.
Excavations in July 2018 uncovered six statues from the Temple of Artemis, providing insight into ancient sculptural techniques. These discoveries demonstrate the artistic skill of ancient craftspeople.
