Baozang Temple

Baozang Temple, Buddhist temple in Fenyuan Township, Taiwan.

Description

Baozang Temple is a Buddhist sanctuary positioned on the eastern foothills of Mount Bagua, overlooking the Maoluo River and 99 Peaks in central Taiwan. The site blends religious spaces with natural surroundings, offering visitors a contemplative setting nestled within the mountain landscape.

History

The temple was founded in 1785 during Emperor Qianlong's reign and underwent multiple renovations throughout the Qing dynasty and Japanese colonial period. These phases of reconstruction shaped the building and preserved its structures into the present day.

Culture

The temple houses over 100 deity statues, including a Matzu figure donated by Tianhou Temple of Lukang in 1873. These representations reflect local religious practices and show how people honor their protective deities.

Practical

Visitors can reach the site by taking regular bus services from Changhua Station, with parking facilities and restrooms available on site. The slope is moderate, and several pathways lead toward the main shrine.

Did you know?

The temple preserves a historic plaque reading 'number one in the precious mountain' and contains a rare camphor offering table from the Daoguang era. These items give visitors a glimpse into the region's artistic and craftsmanship traditions.
