Yifang Old House

Yifang Old House is a three-section residential compound in Daan District featuring traditional Chinese architecture with a central building and two side wings. The entire structure preserves typical construction methods of the era, including reinforced walls and detailed woodwork.

The Chen family, who migrated from Fujian province, built this compound in 1876 during the Qing Dynasty when the area remained outside urban development. The defensive construction design emerged from security concerns during that frontier period.

The residence reflects building styles from Anxi County in Quanzhou, featuring a distinctive dovetail roof and defensive elements typical of Fujian architecture. These design choices reveal how settlers brought their homeland construction traditions to Taiwan.

The residence is located at 128, Lane 155, Section 3, Keelung Road, approximately 15 minutes on foot from Gongguan Station through residential neighborhoods. The walk from the station passes through mixed modern and older streets typical of the area.

The building contains gun slots beneath its windows, integrated during construction to protect inhabitants from threats in the 1800s. These hidden defensive features reveal the practical security concerns that influenced the design.
