Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Xingtian Village, Taiwan

Fo Guang Shan is a Buddhist monastery comprising multiple temples, meditation halls, and gardens set across mountainous terrain. The structures display traditional Chinese architectural design integrated throughout the expansive complex.

The monastery was founded in 1967 when Venerable Master Hsing Yun acquired land in the southern mountain region. It has since grown into a major Buddhist center with international significance.

The monastery embodies an active Buddhist community where visitors can observe the daily practices and rituals of resident monks. Prayer ceremonies and spiritual activities shape how people experience and use this sacred space.

Check at the entrance which areas are open to visitors and obtain a map to navigate the large grounds. Allow several hours to explore the main temples and gardens at a comfortable pace.

A massive seated Buddha statue made of metal rises above the grounds and can be seen from many kilometers away. This landmark figure serves as a focal point and reference for the entire surrounding region.
