Avdiivka, Industrial city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine
Avdiivka is a city in Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine, located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Donetsk. The settlement sits on elevated ground at around 200 meters (650 feet) and combines residential blocks with large factory facilities.
Fugitive serfs founded the settlement in 1778 and began farming the land. The construction of the Catherine Railway in the late 19th century and the opening of the coke plant in 1963 transformed the village into an industrial center.
The name comes from Avdei Ivanov, a serf who fled and formed a farming community here. The bilingual presence in daily life reflects the cultural connection between Ukrainian and Russian inhabitants.
Visiting is currently not possible due to the ongoing military situation, and most public services are suspended. Travelers should check current safety warnings and official advisories before making any plans for the region.
The coke plant was once the largest producer of coke chemicals in Ukraine and employed thousands of workers from surrounding areas. Massive evacuations in February 2024 reduced the population from over 31,000 to around 1,600 people within weeks.
