Verkhnotoretske, Urban settlement in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine
Verkhnotoretske is an urban-type settlement in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. The settlement sits in a river valley and functions as a local hub for the surrounding area.
The settlement originated in 1772 on the site of a former Cossack winter camp. It gained its urban-type status in 1938 and was renamed Skotuwata from 1963 to 1978.
The settlement reflects the transition from rural to urban development in Ukraine, with residents maintaining connections to both agricultural traditions and industrial activities.
The settlement is served by a railway line connecting Yasynuvata and Kramatorsk, providing important regional connections. Visitors should expect infrastructure typical of smaller Ukrainian settlements.
Following Ukraine's 2023 administrative reforms, Verkhnotoretske will transition from its Soviet-era urban-type settlement classification to a new settlement designation.
