Pivnichne, Urban settlement in Toretsk Hromada, Ukraine
Pivnichne is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine, part of the Toretsk Hromada administrative area in the Donetsk region. Buildings and local facilities are spread across the territory without forming a single central point.
The settlement grew up near coal mining operations in the late 18th century, which shaped the character of the area from an early stage. In 2016, it was renamed Pivnichne as part of a national process to replace Soviet-era place names across Ukraine.
Russian is the language most commonly heard in daily life in Pivnichne, even though Ukrainian is the country's official language. This reflects the broader linguistic pattern found across many communities in eastern Ukraine.
Pivnichne can be reached by car or on foot via local roads that connect it to the wider Toretsk Hromada area. Since there is no single center, it is worth planning your route before arriving.
In 2023, Ukraine abolished the urban-type settlement category across the country, meaning this administrative classification no longer officially exists. Pivnichne is therefore a place whose administrative category disappeared during its own lifetime.
