Luhanske, Urban settlement in Svitlodarsk hromada, Ukraine.
Luhanske is an urban-type settlement in the Svitlodarsk urban hromada, located in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. It is a small residential locality set in the flat, industrial landscape that characterizes this part of the country.
The settlement was founded in 1701, when it became part of the Bakhmut administrative region. The area changed administratively several times over the following centuries before its most recent reorganization in 2020.
Luhanske sits in a part of eastern Ukraine where Ukrainian and Russian have long been used side by side in daily life, and this is visible in local signage and place names. The settlement's name itself has different spellings depending on the language used.
Luhanske is located in Donetsk Oblast, a region affected by ongoing conflict, and travel to the area requires careful consideration of current safety conditions. Checking official travel advisories before any visit is strongly recommended.
Despite being founded in 1701, Luhanske appears on relatively recent administrative maps under its current name, as it was long recorded under different administrative units. The Ukrainian term for its settlement type, "selyshche miskoho typu", describes a category between a village and a full town, a distinction that has no direct equivalent in most Western European countries.
