Пам'ятник Миколі Островському, monument in Boyarka, Ukraine
The Monument to Nikolai Ostrovsky in Boyarka was a bust of the Soviet writer made from tinted acrylic glass, erected in 1971 next to the local museum. The sculpture depicted a young man in Red Army uniform holding a book and stood there for several decades until it was removed and destroyed in 2014 without stated reasons.
The monument was erected in 1971 by Ukrainian sculptors W. Klokov and P. Odintsev and underwent restoration two years later to preserve its condition. It disappeared in 2014 during a period of decommunization when many Soviet monuments were removed across Ukraine.
The monument no longer exists, but its former location was next to Boyarka's local museum, which remains open to visitors today. For those interested in the site's history, the museum can provide information and archives about the former monument.
The monument was closely tied to a legend claiming Ostrovsky participated in building a narrow-gauge railway near Boyarka in 1921 to help Kyiv survive a harsh winter. However, historical documents prove Ostrovsky had no involvement in that project, and the story was more artistic invention than historical fact.
