Turnham Green tube station, London Underground station
Turnham Green tube station is a London Underground stop on the District Line, located in the Chiswick area of the London Borough of Hounslow. It has two island platforms covered by wooden canopies, with a street-level entrance opening directly onto Turnham Green Terrace.
The station opened in 1869 as a surface stop on the London and South Western Railway, serving the line between Kensington and Richmond. Electrification in 1905 brought it into the Metropolitan District Railway network and made services more frequent.
The station takes its name from Turnham Green, an old common that gave this part of Chiswick its identity. Commuters pass through daily on their way to the shops and cafés along Turnham Green Terrace, just outside the entrance.
The District Line runs here throughout the day, but the Piccadilly Line only stops early in the morning and late at night, so it is worth checking before you travel. The entrance opens onto Turnham Green Terrace, where bus stops are within easy walking distance.
The area just outside the station was the site of the Battle of Turnham Green in 1642, when parliamentary forces stopped a Royalist advance on London during the English Civil War. It was one of the largest confrontations of that war, yet it ended without a single shot being fired.
