Chautauqua County, County in Southern Tier, New York.
Chautauqua County spans 1,500 square miles of land and water, featuring rolling hills with elevations ranging between 1,100 and 2,100 feet above sea level.
The territory, established in 1808 and organized in 1811, was inhabited by Erie people until the 1650s before the Seneca Nation gained control through conquest.
The establishment of the first New York Chautauqua Assembly in 1874 by John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller initiated educational programs on Chautauqua Lake's shores.
The county provides higher education through Jamestown Community College and State University of New York at Fredonia, serving local and regional students.
The central Chautauqua Lake forms part of two distinct watersheds, with waters flowing both to the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean.
