Upper Darby Township is a community in Delaware County in Pennsylvania. The 7.9 square mile (20 square kilometers) area includes residential neighborhoods and commercial districts along the western edge of Philadelphia.
Swedish settlers founded the first European settlement in 1653 on territory belonging to the Lenape people. The community developed during the 19th century with railroad construction and later adopted a home rule government structure with expanded local powers.

The Market-Frankford Line terminal at 69th Street Transportation Center connects the township to downtown Philadelphia. Regional buses run between residential areas and the rail station.
Students from Highland Park Elementary School ran a campaign in the 1970s that made the Pennsylvania firefly the official state insect. Their project started as a school initiative and reached the state legislature.
