Avery County, Administrative county in Western North Carolina, US
Located in the Appalachian Mountains, Avery County spans 247 square miles of mountainous terrain with an average elevation of 3,510 feet above sea level.
Established in 1911 from parts of Caldwell, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties, Avery County became the 100th and final county formed in North Carolina.
The Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain celebrate the Scottish heritage of the early settlers who arrived in the region during the 1770s.
Residents access county services through the administrative center in Newland, which manages programs for social services, emergency management, and community development.
The county contains Grassy Ridge Bald, reaching 6,165 feet, making Avery County the highest average elevation of any county east of the Mississippi River.
