Founded in 1882 by the New York Steam Company, the system expanded from lower Manhattan to become the largest commercial steam network in the United States.

Six generating stations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens produce 27 billion pounds of steam annually for commercial and residential buildings.

The network supplies major landmarks including the Empire State Building and Grand Central Terminal through an extensive underground pipe system.
