Rockwood Chocolate Factory Historic District, Industrial historic district in Wallabout, Brooklyn, United States.
Rockwood Chocolate Factory Historic District is a factory complex in Wallabout, Brooklyn, comprising 16 interconnected buildings. These structures were built between 1891 and 1928 and feature red brick facades with Renaissance Revival elements spread across roughly 1.8 acres.
The complex was built as a production facility for Rockwood & Company chocolate manufacturing and became an important part of Brooklyn's industrial growth. The factory remained operational until 1957 and provided work for numerous people in the area.
The buildings show how factory spaces were transformed into homes while keeping the original late 19th-century industrial design features. Visitors can still see the red brick walls and details that recall the chocolate-making era.
The buildings are located near Washington and Park avenues and consist of several five-story structures. Today they function as loft apartments with many historical features preserved.
A fire occurred at the factory in 1919 that caused significant damage to the complex. This incident is remembered as one of the major events in the site's operational history.
