Emmanuel Baptist Church stands at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and St James Place, featuring pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses.
The congregation established in 1882 with 194 members who separated from Washington Avenue Baptist Church before constructing their permanent building in 1887.
The church maintains regular religious services and community programs, serving approximately 2,200 members through its sanctuary, parish hall, and school building.
The building received multiple restorations under a master plan from 1994, including exterior repairs, structural stabilization, and improvements to public access.
The interior space contains original decorative finishes and a central font, recognized as one of the finest surviving 19th-century church interiors in New York City.
