Brooklyn Academy of Music

The building on Lafayette Avenue includes the Howard Gilman Opera House, the Harvey Theater and the BAM Fisher Building, along with four cinema screens and several rehearsal rooms. The spaces spread across different floors and offer both traditional halls with balconies and smaller studio stages for experimental work.

Operations began in 1908 after moving from Montague Street following a fire that destroyed the earlier facility. Geraldine Farrar and Enrico Caruso performed at the opening shows.

The name refers to the entire borough and marks this place as a central address for contemporary performance in New York. Visitors find an audience open to new forms in dance, music and theatre, often attending multiple shows in a single evening.

Multiple subway lines stop at Atlantic Terminal and lead directly to the entrance within a few minutes' walk. The halls are reachable by elevator and offer access for wheelchair users.

The Harvey Theater kept its brick walls and worn surfaces during the 1987 renovation, so traces of time remain visible inside. This decision still shapes the feel of theatre performances today.
