Brooklyn Navy Yard, Naval shipyard in Brooklyn, United States.
Brooklyn Navy Yard is a former naval shipyard on the East River in Brooklyn, United States. It covers a large waterfront site with dry docks, workshop halls, warehouses and administrative buildings made of brick and steel.
The yard opened in the early 19th century and built warships for the American navy over a century and a half. During World War II, numerous battleships and aircraft carriers left the slipways here before operations ceased in the 1960s.
The complex takes its name from its original military function and shows the transformation from defense facility to modern production center. Visitors can observe the old industrial architecture with its brick buildings and cranes while new businesses operate in the preserved halls around them.
Access is through guided tours starting at the visitor center in Building 92, offering insight into the maritime past and current use. The site remains a working industrial area, so many sections are accessible only with a guide.
A short stretch of old railway tracks still runs through the site, recalling the former rail network that moved materials and equipment between docks and workshops. Some of the old cranes remain in place, framing the modern businesses today.
