Morehead City

Morehead City is a port town located on a peninsula between Bogue Sound and Newport River along the North Carolina coast. The community spans residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and an active shipping terminal that handles various cargo operations.

The town was founded in the 1850s when investors created the Shepard Point Land Company to establish a deep-water port. It was officially incorporated in 1860 and grew into a working harbor for regional trade.

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament draws anglers from around the world to compete in a legendary fishing event held here each year. This competition has become central to how the town sees itself and how visitors connect with the place.

The port operates year-round, though severe storms can disrupt activity. Visitors should watch for uneven dock surfaces and stay alert to ship traffic when walking near the waterfront.

Scientists from Duke University and the University of North Carolina regularly conduct marine research in the local waters. This ongoing work makes the port a hub for coastal science studies.
