Armonk, Census-designated place in North Castle, Westchester County, United States.
Armonk is a community in the southeastern corner of New York state, near the Connecticut border, covering about 6 square miles of wooded land in rolling hills. The area sits at an elevation of roughly 387 feet and consists mostly of residential neighborhoods with single-family homes amid dense deciduous forest.
The area was originally inhabited by the Kitchawan before European settlers arrived in the 18th century. In the 20th century, the rural area transformed into a residential suburb as large corporations established headquarters nearby.
The name comes from the Kitchawan language and refers to a place where streams meet. This meaning is still reflected in the wooded landscape, which is crossed by small brooks.
The area is best reached by car, as public transport is limited and roads often wind through forested areas. The school district operates four educational facilities located at different points throughout the community.
The global headquarters of IBM and Indian IT firm Wipro are located here, giving the suburban community an unusual international corporate presence. An annual outdoor art show brings together regional artists and craftspeople who display their work in juried exhibitions.
