H. B. Robinson Nuclear Generating Station, nuclear power plant
The H. B. Robinson Nuclear Generating Station is a nuclear power plant in Darlington County, South Carolina, operating since the early 1970s to supply electricity to the region. The facility uses a pressurized water reactor that generates steam to turn turbines, and relies on nearby Lake Robinson for cooling water during operation.
Construction began in the late 1960s and the plant connected to the power grid in 1971, making it one of the first commercial nuclear facilities in the southeastern United States. A coal-fired unit that previously operated on the site was shut down in 2012 and later demolished, after which the facility focused entirely on nuclear power generation.
The plant sits on a secured facility with controlled access points and is not open for public tours. Visitors can view the site from outside and explore the surrounding area, including the nearby lake and local communities in the region.
It is lesser known that the plant operates with a pressurized water reactor, a system where water remains liquid under high pressure even at extremely high temperatures. This design provides additional safety and stability and is among the most common reactor designs worldwide.
