Greencastle spans across 5.29 square miles of land in west-central Indiana, positioned between Indianapolis and Terre Haute along Interstate 70 at 260 meters elevation.
The settlement, established in 1821 by Ephraim Dukes, gained city status through an election in 1861, with E. R. Kercheval serving as the first mayor.
DePauw University forms an integral part of Greencastle's educational structure, contributing to the intellectual development of the community since its establishment.
The Greencastle Community School Corporation manages five educational facilities, including primary schools, intermediate school, middle school, and high school for local students.
