Gatlinburg, Mountain resort city in Sevier County, United States
Gatlinburg is a mountain town in Sevier County, eastern Tennessee, positioned directly at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The main street runs through a narrow valley lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels, while the surrounding ridges are densely covered with trees.
Settlement began in the early 19th century when pioneers moved into the remote valley and established a small community. With the opening of the national park in 1934, the town rapidly developed into a destination for visitors from across the country.
The town sits tucked between forested slopes and draws hikers who set out early toward the national park trails. Cafés and shops downtown open early and stay active late into the evening when visitors return from mountain outings.
During summer and fall the streets fill with visitors, so arriving early in the day or planning outside peak season helps avoid crowds. Pedestrians move easily through the center, while more distant points can be reached by public shuttles or on foot via sidewalks.
A cable tramway connects the town center to a higher elevation, offering wide views over the valley during the ride. Once at the top visitors find ski slopes in winter and hiking trails in summer, along with a small ice rink that stays open year-round.
