Malvern, Home rule municipality in Chester County, Pennsylvania
Malvern is a home rule municipality in Chester County, Pennsylvania, combining residential streets, shops, and commercial zones within about two square kilometers. The area is served by the Great Valley School District and sits roughly 30 kilometers west of Philadelphia.
Welsh immigrants acquired land from William Penn in the 17th century and founded the first settlements in the area. The place was known as West Chester Intersection until 1873, when it adopted its current name.
The name recalls the Malvern Hills in England and ties the borough to Welsh roots from colonial times. Residents celebrate one of the oldest parades in the country at the end of May, held since the mid-1800s.
Several routes lead east toward Philadelphia and west into the countryside from here. Public schools and local shops are often within walking distance of residential areas.
The annual parade on the last Monday in May was launched in 1854, making it one of the oldest memorial events in the United States. The municipality changed its name only in the late 19th century to highlight the connection to an English range.
