Indiana University Bloomington is a public research university in Bloomington, Indiana. The campus spans roughly 1,900 acres (770 hectares) with buildings made from Indiana limestone and includes twenty separate academic libraries holding nearly ten million volumes.
The institution started as State Seminary in 1820, changed to Indiana College in 1829, and gained its current university status in 1838. Over two centuries it grew into one of the largest research centers in the Midwest region of the United States.
The Eskenazi Museum of Art displays works from different centuries, while the Lilly Library holds rare manuscripts and early books. Students and visitors use both spaces regularly for research or quiet contemplation of the collections.
The school offers over 900 degree programs and welcomes more than 90,000 students from 170 countries. An extensive campus bus system connects all areas of the large grounds and helps visitors find their way around.
Research teams at this university developed treatments for testicular cancer that have saved more than 400,000 lives so far. These medical advances changed the treatment of this cancer worldwide and remain a breakthrough today.
