Elias Abel House

The Elias Abel House is a symmetrical two-story structure with a pitched roof, limestone basement walls, and multiple brick chimneys in western Bloomington. The property features a substantial footprint with traditional materials that reflect 19th-century construction methods.

The building was constructed in 1845 and served as the residence of Monroe County Treasurer Elias Abel. Years later he sold it and moved to the Blair-Dunning House, marking a shift in his life and position.

The house displays the I-House design that was common among early Monroe County settlers, with two stories each divided into two rooms. Visitors can still observe this typical room arrangement from that era.

The house was restored starting in 1976 and placed under historic protection, preventing its demolition. Visitors should allow time to explore the exterior architecture and its location in western Bloomington.

The interior features a staircase crafted from hand-planed cherry wood, showing the craftsmanship of the original builders. The attic also contains a traditional walnut log that recalls earlier building traditions.
