The Elias Abel House stands as a symmetrical two-story structure with a pitched roof, limestone basement walls, and multiple brick chimneys in western Bloomington.
Constructed in 1845 for $250, the residence belonged to Monroe County treasurer Elias Abel, who later sold it for $1,000 and moved to the Blair-Dunning House.
The building represents the I-house design common among early Monroe County settlers, featuring two stories divided into two rooms on each floor.
The property underwent restoration efforts starting in 1976 when it received protection as a historic site, preventing its demolition and enabling renovation projects.
Inside the attic rests a traditional walnut log, while the interior showcases a staircase crafted from hand-planed cherry wood.
