Altavista, Administrative division in Virginia, United States
Altavista is an administrative division in Campbell County, Virginia, located along the Roanoke River with a defined municipal boundary and local governance structure. The town includes a historic downtown core with established neighborhoods and provides standard municipal services to its residents.
Lane Brothers Construction Company established a manufacturing facility here in 1905 called Lane's Siding, which became the foundation for future settlement. The area was officially incorporated as the town of Altavista in 1912 following the company's expansion into large-scale furniture production.
The downtown area reflects the values of an early 20th-century mill town, with buildings arranged around the core economic activities that once drove daily life. The spatial layout shows how residents organized their community around work, commerce, and local gathering places.
The town is accessible by local roads and has a town hall located in the downtown area where residents and visitors can obtain information. There are public spaces and parks scattered throughout the community that are open to the public.
The Lane Company evolved from a small sawmill and box manufacturing operation into one of the region's major furniture makers during the early 1900s. This shift shaped the physical layout and building types visible throughout the community today.
