Letchworth State Park, State park and natural reserve in western New York, United States
Letchworth State Park is a protected area in the western hills of New York State, with a deep canyon carved by the Genesee River. The three waterfalls spread along the gorge, while rock walls and forest strips cover the slopes.
An industrialist gave his estate to New York State in the early 20th century so it could remain as public recreation land. Communities of the Seneca once lived here, and traces of their presence are still visible in places.
The middle waterfall echoes through the gorge and is crossed by a stone bridge that has stood here for generations. Visitors walking the trails often pause at overlook points to watch the interplay of water and rock.
Several entry roads lead into different sections of the grounds, and signage helps with orientation along the canyon rim. Hiking routes vary in difficulty and length, so checking a map beforehand is worthwhile.
An old metal railroad bridge stands high above the upper waterfall and looks like an engineering line drawn between the treetops. Some visitors notice that trains still pass over it occasionally, shifting the soundscape for a brief moment.
