Pittsburgh International Airport, International airport in Findlay Township, United States
Pittsburgh International Airport is an international commercial aerodrome in Findlay Township and Moon Township, Pennsylvania, serving the Greater Pittsburgh Region with domestic and international connections. The facility has four parallel runways spread across the site, handling arrivals and departures for passenger and cargo operations.
Operations at the airport began in 1952 when five airlines moved their services from the older Allegheny County Airport to this new site. Between 1987 and 1992, a major redevelopment project costing over one billion dollars brought a new terminal building and expanded infrastructure to the facility.
This terminal is one of the few in the United States where visitors without tickets may enter the secure area after passing through screening, a policy introduced through a program approved in 2016. Families and companions can accompany travelers all the way to the gate or wait together in the departure halls.
Travelers will find several parking areas near the terminal, ranging from short-term spots close to the entrance to economy lots farther from the building. Online reservation is available and can help secure a space during busy travel periods, especially around holidays.
This facility generates its own electricity through a microgrid system that combines natural gas turbines and solar panels, operating independently from the public power network. The setup reduces annual energy expenses by approximately one million dollars while ensuring stable operation during grid outages.
